3D-ICONS Attracts Attention at Digital Heritage 2013

The 3D-ICONS Project had a high profile at Digital Heritage 2013 with a paper presented on the CARARE2 Metadata Schema, a three hour Workshop as well as participation in a European Projects networking session.

The Digital Heritage International Congress was held in Marseilles from 28 October - 1 November and encompassed VSMM 2013 , GCH 2013  and Memory of the World  (2nd UNESCO Int’l Conf. on Memory of the World in the Digital Age). It was attended by over 600 delegates from the sphere of archaeology and digital humanities and organised into six parallel tracks (Digitization,  Visualization and Interaction, Analysis and Interpretation, Policy and Standards, Preservation, & Theory, Methodologies and Applications) in addition to keynote speeches, workshops and special events.

 The Congress was held in the Villa Méditerranée, MUCEM and Fort St. Jean buildings which make up the impressive museum complex on the sea front. This is just opposite the famous Cathédrale Sainte-Marie-Majeure.

On Tuesday afternoon, Andrea D'Andrea, presented CARARE2, the 3D-ICONS schema to around 25 people with a specific interest in metadata. The paper entitled "CARARE 2.0: a metadata schema for 3D Cultural Objects CARARE 2.0: a metadata schema for 3D CulturalObjects" by Andrea D'Andrea, CISA and Kate Fernie, MDR Partners can be downloaded here (PDF 2.5 MB).

On the Wednesday morning, several of the 3D-ICONS partners participated in a Workshop to present their work in the project and explain the objectives of 3D-ICONS. Case Studies were given by the Discovery Programme (Ireland), STARC (Cyprus), Polimi (Italy), CAAI (Spain) and MNIR (Romania). Fabio Remondino (FBK) talked about paradata and Andrea D'Andrea (CISA) about the CARARE 2.0 metadata schema. Daniel Pletinckx (VisDim) covered the 3D model publication formats that the project has selected to use and Sheena Bassett (MDR) concluded the workshop with an overview of the IPR Schema and future uses of 3D models. The workshop was very well attended and the audience asked several questions ensuring lively discussion.

On Friday morning, Sheena Bassett attended the EU Projects Networking Session as the representative of 3D-ICONS to learn about other related initiatives and explore future co-operation opportunities.
